The Best Birthday I've Had in Years (And What It Taught Me About Being Seen)
Share
I've never been someone who's comfortable in the spotlight. As an introvert, I usually try to shrink the moments where attention lands on me... ESPECIALLY on my birthday. Deflect, downplay, change the subject. I even vended at my WORST MARKET on my 21st birthday. But this birthday? This one was different. And I think it's because, for the first time in a long time, I actually let myself be celebrated instead of hiding from it. And I gave myself the ick lol.
It started earlier than I expected. My new job went out of their way to make my day feel special, and by the end of it, it felt like nearly everyone had stopped by or sent a "happy birthday" my way. That kind of thing hits different when you're coming from years of being a teacher, where birthdays often pass quietly in the background because everyone's just trying to survive the day. So being seen like that, genuinely celebrated instead of just acknowledged, meant more than I expected it to. It's a small thing, but it reminded me that the effort I've been putting in, even just a few months in, hasn't gone unnoticed. That felt like a win worth sitting with.
But the part of the day that really stayed with me happened at home. My fiancé didn't just plan something, he listened. All the little things around our new house I'd been mentioning, hoping to get to eventually, he quietly knocked out one by one, even the exhausting ones, just to make the day feel lighter for me. And honestly? That's the kind of "seen" that hits the introverted girl in me the hardest. Not grand gestures, just someone paying attention to the small things I said, and caring enough to act on them.
I won't pretend I've always had that. In past relationships, I didn't always feel that kind of attentiveness, and for a while I wondered if it was something I'd just have to live without. So if you're in a season where you don't feel fully seen by the people around you, I want you to hear this: it doesn't mean it's not coming. Sometimes it just means it's not here yet. Give it time. The right people- whether that's a partner, a workplace, or a community- do show up. And when they do, you'll understand exactly why the wait mattered.
I'm in such a good place right now, and I don't say that lightly. I'm grateful, genuinely, that you're here reading this, that you cared enough to click through and be part of my life beyond the feed. This next chapter of my business means a lot to me, and I'm so glad you're here for it as it unfolds. More is coming, and I'm excited to share it with you.
Here's to being seen! And I encourage you to let yourself be seen too. 🐻
